Climbing Frames Review

David Hilton, Head of Curriculum and Standards, The Active Learning Trust

The Climbing Frames materials provide a simple, straightforward and structured approach to assessment alongside the planning of the next stages of learning. Based on the rigorous principles of APP and backed up with thorough progress measures across KS1, 2 and 3 the Climbing Frames materials support teachers, subjects, and whole school approaches to high quality assessment.

As a multi-academy trust, consistency, accuracy and progression is key across the whole range of our schools. As soon as headteachers, subject leaders and classroom teachers engaged with the materials they very quickly felt assured, secure and confident in the ‘new world without levels’. Based on ‘best practice’ and secured in assessment processes teachers fell confident in using the new Climbing Frames immediately gave colleagues the confidence to start assessing and planning for progression within the new curriculum.

‘Fantastic!’ were the words from the headteacher of one of our schools as soon as she started engaging with the Climbing Frames materials. Clear, focused and common sense guidance that is based on national expertise immediately made colleagues feel secure in the next phase of assessment within the new curriculum. The guidance alongside the actual Climbing Frames really gives teachers the confidence to move forward with secure knowledge of ‘where they are going, what they are doing and how they will do it.’

There are a lot of products out there that claim to address the issues around ‘the world without levels’  however the clarity of Climbing Frames, its ease of use, its revision of P-Levels, the progression in thinking and learning alongside online tracking,  put a lot of clear water between it and its rivals. Very good value for money for a school or organisation wanting to take ownership of the future of assessment and learning.
